Introducing North Austin Style Encore

Thursday, May 1, 2014

I have always maintained that I am not into fashion. I'm into shopping, which is something entirely different. Specifically, since childhood, I've been into second hand shopping. My grandma used to own a resale shop, I grew up going to yard sales every weekend, and I even did a stint as a buyer at Buffalo Exchange when we first moved to Texas. I'm always excited to learn about new resale and consignment stores in Austin.

Plato's Closet is one resale shop that I'm familiar with, but have only been to twice. It's a national chain of resale shops that buys and carries a lot of on-trend clothing for the high school and college set; For example, when I went in I saw a lot of Abercrombie, American Eagle, and Forever 21.

But did you know Plato's Closet has a more sophisticated older sister? Style Encore is a part of the same company, but it caters to an older crowd. They recently had their grand opening here in Austin, and last week I went in to check it out.
Some of the more popular brands in stock were J. Crew, Banana Republic, and Michael Kors. There was also a fair amount of Antropologie clothing and designer denim. For those who are looking for high end luxury brands, there's a rack filled with DVF wrap dresses, Marc Jacobs frocks, and others of that ilk.
The store was organized well, which makes shopping easier. Shoes and clothes were grouped by type, size, and color. For instance all the size medium knit tops clearly marked and were hung together with all the white shirts together, all the pink, all the black, etc. For those of you who feel overwhelmed by traditional thrift store shopping, stepping into this upscale resale shop instead will be a welcome relief.
Like Plato's Closet, Style Encore has a buyer in store available at all times, which means you can sell your clothing and accessories to them. Here's a list of what they're currently buying. I took in four items and they bought two: a NWT Banana Republic blazer I had scored at a thrift store in Seymour, Indiana, as well as a pair of Cynthia Rowley ankle pants that I originally purchased at Marshalls, that I had only worn once. They priced the blazer at $14 and the pants for $16.
When you want to sell, the buyer will look through your offerings and you can choose to stay at the counter to see what they accept or shop around while they sort through your items. They'll offer you 30% - 40% (depending on the item) of what they plan to sell the item for in the shop. They try to price items around 70% of original retail prices. Unlike Buffalo Exchange, where you're at the mercy of the buyer's expertise, Style Encore uses a computer system that will help price the item. When the buyer is done going through your stuff, they'll give you an offer. You can choose to take the offer as "trade", which equates to store credit (untaxed) or walk with cash (taxed). Vexed? Here's a helpful video that explains the process.
I took the trade and ended up buying a striped dress originally from The Limited for $20 and a pristine Banana Republic trench coat for $35, that I just know I'll have for the rest of my life, it's such a classic piece. My aunt scored a gorgeous black lace Leifdottir dress for $40 (originally $288 from Anthropologie) that she's going to wear to Austin Fashion Week this weekend.

All in all, I recommend Style Encore, especially for women who work outside the home and get to dress professionally. There is quite a bit of career wear. I'd also recommend Style Encore for party dresses-- it's the ideal place to get that perfect dress to wear to a summer wedding. Be sure to check out the local Austin Style Encore on Facebook to get a sneak peek of their current stock.

22 weeks // Feelin' Like a True Texan + an Ariat Giveaway [closed]

Friday, November 22, 2013

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Ariat.

I've been meaning to get legitimate cowboy boots for a long time now. One cannot live in Texas without real western boots, right? Why they don't issue us all a pair with a breakfast taco and plate of brisket at the state line upon arrival, I do not know. If I were governor of Texas, I'd certainly make this my first line of action upon inauguration.

I had a cheap pair of boots that I bought for my time on FNL, but, as my best friend Bee pointed out, every time I wore them, they were so painful that my littlest toenails would fall off (I am bewildered as to why I continued to torture myself with them, actually).

Fast forward to a few years later: the heels were worn down, and I could no longer squeeze my feet into them at all (Remember? With each child, my feet have grown a half size), so I finally gave them to Goodwill a few months ago. Now they're someone else's self-inflicted torture devices. Goodbye, cruel boots! And...

Hello, new dream boots! Look, y'all! Authentic Ariat cowboy boots-- toenails still intact:
date: 17 Nov 2013 // occasion: City Life gathering
dress: c/o eShakti // boots: c/o Ariat // cardigan: Lands End Canvas // bag: thrifted // Texas necklace: c/o Maya Brenner

There's something about this outfit. Whenever I wear it, Chris just lights up and offers to take me out to BBQ. I should probably wear this seven days a week!

I swooned a little when I opened the Ariat box and laid eyes on these beauties for the first time. The patina, the stitching, the almond shaped toe... these are pretty much perfection. Admittedly, I had a little panic attack trying to get them on the first time, but once I learned that I needed socks and that I needed to use the boot's pull loops, all was great! Who knew those loops were actually functional?

Sadly, as much as I'd like to wear this dress all the time so Chris offers to take me out to dinner, this may be the last time I can don this dress during this pregnancy. The front is starting to creep up now that the bump has become a formidable force. The boots, on the other hand, have just been broken in, so I expect these will join the heavy rotation for fall. I'm going to wear these with dresses, skinny jeans, maxi skirts... oh, man. I'm just thrilled to finally own a pair of well made, classic western boots. It's hard to believe that I didn't even own a pair growing up in the country, living next door to a horse stable and riding ring!

And just to be sure these boots are with me in the long run, I ordered these a half size up from my current size in case Baby 3 follows suit and causes my feet to grow another size. Fingers (and toes) crossed that that will not be the case, though!

22 weeks // winterizing... almost!

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Curse this Austin weather! One week ago there was a freeze advisory, so I thought for sure I would need a winter coat ASAP. I haven't bought a new winter coat in over seven years, believe it or not (since moving to Texas, actually). One of the women in my city group recommended that in addition to good maternity jeans that I get a coat that is specifically for a pregnant belly. Assuming I would have a string of 30º- 40º nights, I saw this maternity parka on sale at ASOS, used a promo code for free two day shipping, and BAM! -- My new fur lined coat arrived... on an 80º day.

date: 21 Nov 2013 // occasion: Ikea run
dress: GAP (maternity) // coat: ASOS (maternity) // necklace: Ragalicious c/o Paypal Cash for Registers // socks: American Apparel // boots: Sorel c/o Planet Shoes

That's okay. I imagine that I'll get good use out of it in Atlanta over the holidays and in the midwest if we decide to make another trip to see my (ailing) grandmother. There's a drawstring on the inside at the waist, so perhaps that's what makes it "maternity". Nonetheless, I'm pretty sure I'll be wearing this for the for next 7+ years regardless if my womb is occupied again or not (but let's face it, at this rate, it probably will be... right, Chris?!)

It's starting to get cooler again, but alas, I'm a summer lover, not a fan of fall and winter. I hate pumpkin spice, and I'd rather go to a swimming pool than a ski resort. I'm going to do bare legs for as long as possible!

Can we talk about these boots for a sec? I had been eying the Sorel Joan of Arctic boots forever after seeing them in a million street style photographs from Sundance a few years back. However, I just couldn't justify getting them since they'd only see the light of day (and snow?) maybe once per year. Planet Shoes (one of my favorite online shoe retailers due to their selection and corporate philosophy of green living) has an unreal stock of Sorel boots. I spied this amped up alternative cousin of the duck boot I originally wanted: hidden wedge, no fur, and I thought those would get more wear here in Austin than the traditional fur lined boots. I love these. I haven't seen anything else like them out there, and I can't wait to try these with a my new leggings and a chunky oversized sweater. Maybe next week?

And this necklace! It's the size of a gong, right? For as long as I can remember, one of my goals in getting dressed every day is to wear something that would cause a stranger to strike up a conversation with me. A social icebreaker, if you will. Yesterday was the hat, for example. Today is the necklace. This necklace is huge (I know!), but it is the number one thing in my wardrobe that will cause people to stop and talk to me. Men, women, young people, old people: it is the instant conversation starter. I can't imagine who gave this up to a thrift store, but I'm happy it's in my life.

This old thing?

Tuesday, April 9, 2013

I haven't been able to part with this cardigan although it's been unworn for (literally) years. If this cardigan were a child, it would be a freshman in high school. I've had this crazy thing in my closet since 1999.
mom go-to outfit
date: 7 April 2013 | occasion: errands with the family
cardigan: Express, 1999! | blouse: thrifted at Savers (similar) | necklace: c/o Lily Neubauer at Noonday Collection (fair trade) | jeans: Paige via Nordstrom Rack | flats: c/o Wanted Shoes, 2010 (similar) | diaper bag: c/o Kipling (similar) | sunglasses: c/o TOMS Eyewear | belt: Target

The sweater, shoes, and shirt are old, but most everything else is new.
kippling baby bag
This diaper bag from Kipling is super brand new. It's so new, that this bag in this print isn't out yet in the US, yet. My other diaper bag finally bit the dust after 2.5 years of daily use (slamming it in the sliding van door will do that, I suppose). This go around I wanted a diaper bag made of nylon so I could spot clean it a little easier. Kipling is the king of tough, cute, nylon bags, and I was so excited when I learned they came out with a baby bag. This diaper bag is awesome because it has plenty of pockets, stroller straps, a matching changing pad, and a cute little purple gorilla keychain that has already provided Jude with easy entertainment in a pinch.
noonday collection necklace
Another newcomer to my closet is this Noonday Collection necklace, which goes with absolutely everything that I own. I love Noonday Collection and all they stand for. This particular necklace was made by a fair trade artisan group in India that creates avenues of employment for the economically disadvantaged.
toms eyewear
Speaking of do-good brands, I've been a longtime fan of TOMS. As a special thanks for spreading the word about all my favorite TOMS Shoes, the kind folks that work there recently sent me a pair of their TOMS sunglasses.

toms windward sunglasses detail
Much like their shoes, their eyewear is a one for one program. For every pair of frames purchased, TOMS pays for eyesight restoration for a person in an economically disadvantaged community either via surgery or medical treatment.
I know I posted this outfit photo yesterday in my Vaseline Spray & Go post; see it in action in the family video I shot here. Although most of my outfit is made of new things, I finally feel like I'm getting back to the old me again. My hair is growing out, my pre-pregnancy clothes are fitting again, and the weather is warming up.
mom uniform
Isn't it crazy that my sweater is fourteen years old? It is my hope that these new acquisitions will have that kind of longevity in my wardrobe, too.

Anyone else out there still rocking a fourteen year old sweater?

My own trash to treasure

Thursday, August 9, 2012

I did it. Finally! A couple weeks ago I completed the monumental task of cleaning out our guestroom which, much to Chris' chagrin, I had been using as closet overflow for a while (and by "a while" I mean over a year). Chris' dad and step-mom were coming for a visit, so it had to be done! I made a sign that said the words "DONATE / SELL / KEEP" and set to work sorting things into those piles.

I took a small selection of my best vintage finds to do my first sale to Feathers, which is one of my favorite Austin vintage boutiques. I shop there often, but I have never sold there. Since I know the vibe of the store, I only took nine pieces for them to consider. I was pleasantly surprised when they took seven. Some of my pieces even made it onto their awesome blog:
feathers
Recognize the skirt on the top right? Yes, that was a part of one of my all-time favorite outfits. I was sad to see it go, but I haven't worn it since a Ladies who Lunch event in 2010, so I figured it was time to let someone else enjoy it.

Because unloading seven pieces hardly made a dent in the Great Closet Clean-out of 2012, that very same day I took four full laundry baskets to Buffalo Exchange to do a sale, too. Way back in the day, for one glorious summer between filming seasons one and two of Friday Night Lights, I worked there as a buyer. Because of this, I made sure to only take in items that are in season and in impeccable condition. I ironed, lint brushed, and folded everything neatly. I even took a baby wipe to the bottom of every pair of shoes and clipped loose threads on clothes. I have a theory that doing all this makes a big difference. They bought almost everything except for one pair of pants, one pair of shoes, and one dress that I thought they priced too low. I now estimate that 10% of my former wardrobe is now sitting at Buffalo Exchange.

My new maternity maxi

Thursday, August 2, 2012

If we're buddies on Twitter, you'll know that last night I had a bit of a wardrobe conundrum. For you see, I'm already up 50 pounds at 31 weeks pregnant, and none of my maternity clothes fit. Yes, friends, I am now bigger than I ever was while pregnant with Jude... and *gulp* I still have at least nine more weeks to go.

Not fitting into maternity clothes may not seem like a big deal (that's what stretchy tank tops and elastic waist athletic shorts are for, right?), but it does present a problem when you're 12 hours out from a photo shoot! For the upcoming issue of a local lifestyle magazine, a little opinion piece written by yours truly will appear, and the editor set up a shoot with renowned photographer Michael Thad Carter. Drat! I had nothing to wear! I had already scoured thrift stores and vintage boutiques but nothing quite worked with this massive bump.

Zoom! A late night trip to Target to secure a maternity maxi* was in order. Mixed with a funky robe and a vintage animal belt (strategically placed to ensure I look pregnant and not just chubby in the photos), I felt this was somewhat indicative of my style and would photograph a little more fun than a plain black dress:
maxi2 elephantbelt
date: 2 August 2012 | occasion: photoshoot, lunch with Rachel
dress: Liz Lange Maternity | robe: thrifted from Savers, Halston | sandals: Old Navy | clutch: vintage, Texas Thrift | belt: thrifted, Goodwill | earrings: c/o Wild Gems

A little note about the robe: Chris did see me trying on this entire outfit last night and inquired, "Are you just wearing that robe around the house or is that going to be a part of your outfit for tomorrow?"

"It's a part of my outfit!" I then shot him dagger eyes so he knew not to say anything else about my interesting choice.

Robe in public aside, I'm excited to see how the published photos turn out. I'm sure by the time the issue comes out, I'll have gained even more weight, and fifty pounds will just be a fraction of the total weight gained by the time Little Lady Bird makes her debut. But let's not blame the baby for that, okay? Let's attribute that to Freebird's steak burritos / kids eat free on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Hot mama!

Thursday, May 24, 2012

Woot! At nearly 22 weeks pregnant, it's official: I am more than half way done with this pregnancy. Holla! And here's yet another post where I squeeze myself into too tight jeans. I show no signs of giving up summer denim despite my burgeoning midsection:

21 weeks wanted wedges 21 weeks
date: 20 May 2012 // occassion: Austin City Life gathering
jeans: Ralph Lauren via TxSC'11 Swap (similar- mega sale // last seen here) // tee: A Pea in the Pod // bag: Buffalo Exchange (similar) // wedges: c/o Wanted

Just like my sudden unshakeable love for denim during this pregnancy, I have developed a sudden unshakeable love for insanely spicy foods.... but here's the kicker-- I can't taste it. The changes one undergoes during pregnancy are the strangest things.  I put ten drops of Dave's in my tortilla soup, despite Chris' warning that "One drop may ruin your soup!".  Yesterday I ordered the El Diablo burger from Hopdoddy and had them add hot sauce. Today I can't stop thinking about Fire in The Hole wings from Pluckers. I am convinced this child is going to come out of me asking for Texas Pete in her bottle.

Hello, Yellow!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Jude's favorite color is yellow. I  think he can point out and say the colors yellow, blue, and red, but when we ask him what his favorite color is, he says with delight, "Yellow!"

If I hand him his blue car, I'll ask him what color it is. He'll point to the tiny bit of yellow trim on it and say, "Yellow!" Same with his purple car. Yesterday Jude shouted "Yellow! Yellow! Yellow!" all down the honey and mustard aisle at the grocery store.

For obvious reasons these are Jude's favorite pants of mine. There is nothing mellow about these neon yellow jeans from Francesca's Collection. On Thursday, I saw their tweet that they had just gotten some  bright denim and saw that they were in my price range and made in the USA. Needless to say, I high-tailed it to the Arboretum store to try some on. I literally sighed with happiness in the fitting room. They came home with me, and I wore them Friday and Saturday (I also got an orange pair, but I'm still trying to figure out how to style 'em):

francesca's yellow pants francesca's yellow pants manic trout lion necklace cynthia vincent for target wedges
date: 19 May 2012 // occasion: Renegade Craft Fair
jeans: Francesca's // blouse: Lucky Brand via Savers (similar) // bag: Longchamp via an estate sale (Nordstrom) // necklace: Manic Trout // wedges: Cynthia Vincent for Target via Sydney (similar)

Last pregnancy I wore a lot of jersey knit dresses and flat sandals. This go-around, I'm squeezing myself into non-maternity jeans for as long as I can. It's become apparent that I need to get myself one of those belly band things. Question for moms: Did you ever buy a belly band to cover up the top of your unbuttoned pants? If so, would you mind recommending one that you liked? I'd love to keep wearing these jeans throughout the summer. And Jude would like it, too.

Colored Denim Addiction: Photographic Evidence, Exhibit A

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

My obsession with colored denim continues. It all started with mint green jeans, and shortly thereafter, I snagged a pair of bright pink jeans from Savers. This outfit photo was snapped last month before my baby bump swelled to much larger proportions, and I doubt that either the jeans or the blouse fit me now. They were quite snug when I got them, but they were both such great finds that I could not pass them up. *gulp* Here's to hoping they'll fit me after Baby Two is born... or here's to hoping Buffalo Exchange will give me a pretty penny for them!

blouse: thrifted, Savers (similar) // jeans: thrifted, Savers // belt: Target (similar) // sandals: c/o Wanted // clutch: Purse & Clutch // necklace: InPink (silver) // sunglasses: Urban Outfitters (similar)

I feel like I've seen variations of this gingham shirt / bright jeans combo everywhere. I'm not quite sure from whom I cribbed this ensemble (most likely Jen, Kelsey, Kendi, or Jessica), but I am digging it's casual summer vibe. Since my outfit photo was a bit lackluster (thus why I hesitated posting it), I did my best computer collaging here and made this just for you:

My Style Evolution

Saturday, December 17, 2011

Free People: We'd love for you to come in and style people during our holiday party, Indiana.
Me: Me?
crazyfaceUh...--

True story: When I started Adored Austin two and a half years ago, I never intended to make outfit posts the main focus. I originally planned to write about fashion news and fashion related events in Austin and to do product reviews. I posted some outfit photos as filler and joined some outfit of the day communities for fun. Honestly, I usually don't think that my style is particularly special, but I do like shopping and writing and the personal style of others, so at the time, starting a style blog made sense to me. People never commented on my event posts (yawn!), but they did comment on my outfits, so now it's kind of become a thing I feel I'm supposed to do.

So because I post what I'm wearing from time to time, over the course of the last two years, I've been asked to style people at stores. I have turned every single one of these opportunities down because there are some days that I can barely dress myself (examples: 2009, 2010, 2011), but when Free People asked me to do this, I reconsidered because their line is so great-- almost everything works together and you can go as little bohemian or as much bohemian as you'd like.

For my styling session today, I went full-on bohemian. Nothing matched: lace, leopard, denim, black, gray, a colorful kimono, tons of jewelry... but that's the thing. I don't think there are any hard and fast "rules" to personal style, and I think that's how my style has evolved since 2009. I think two and a half years ago, I would have loved all of these pieces individually but I never would have paired them up together.

I feel very me in this crazy get-up. I'd wear this to church or the grocery store or anywhere, really, and I don't think I could have said this in 2009.

What about you? Have you felt your style evolving in the last couple of years? I'm curious if you're breaking traditional fashion rules or if your style is becoming a little more refined.

Jane By Design Style Challenge: Task one

Friday, December 16, 2011

Have you heard of the show Jane By Design, yet? It's going to premiere on ABC Family on January 3rd, and I've been invited to participate in the Jane By Design blogger challenges in the weeks leading up to the series premiere.
"Jane By Design follows Jane Quimby (Erica Dasher), a quirky teen with an eclectic chic fashion sense, who lands a job at a hip design studio when they mistake her for an adult. Torn between her love of fashion and the need to finish high school, Jane conceals her true age to assist the demanding, but talented Gray Chandler Murray (Andie MacDowell), who travels the world in search of the next big style trend. Jane quickly learns that working for a successful executive in the cutthroat world of fashion is not as glamorous as she once thought. But with help from her best friend Billy Nutter (Nicholas Roux), Jane tries to keep up appearances as she toggles between two lives and guard her secret. Even with Billy’s support, will Jane’s ruse be a passing fad, or will she be able to fashion a career in the design business?" -official site
Sounds like The Devil Wears Prada mixed with Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. In other words: sounds adorable and I can't wait to tune in. (Psst... here's a clip to pique your interest).

ABC Family reached out to a large number of bloggers (including my friends Tieka and Katy) last week asking if we'd be interested in competing in seven challenges for the chance for our blog to be mentioned on the new show. Regardless of the prize, I'm usually up for a challenge, and I read the fine print and saw that I don't have to go beg for Facebook votes or eat anything weird or sign people up for an email list or anything super annoying like that, so I thought this could be a fun thing.

A few days later the largest, heaviest package I have ever received showed up at my house:
Inside the box was a trunk. Inside the trunk was another box. Inside that box was a bunch of random items with challenge number tags on them, and (yay!) a really great, legit dress form (which, coincidentally, was at the top of this year's Christmas list):
JBDstylechallenge
The day after my package arrived, we all got our first email from Jane's boss Gray:
By now you should have received the trunk I sent you and you should be ready to begin the interview process.

The blogger we are looking for at Donovan Decker must have a sparkling personality, impressive creativity and the ability to influence the masses. You must also be an expert shopper with a trained eye for what’s new & unique.

For this phase of the interview process, take the $50 gift card I sent you and go shopping. When you return, shoot a video of your shopping haul and post it to your own blog. Then show me that you can engage your readers. Tell them to share their own haul videos here and mention the name of your blog.

Impress me with your originality. A video of what you bought at the most fabulous boutique could bore me to tears. A video of what you bought at the grocery store could fascinate me. Or bore me to tears. I shop around the world from Mumbai to Tokyo to Sydney looking for inspiration, and sometimes I don’t know what I’m looking for until I see it. -Gray
So I'm the idiot (and ex-actress) who thought we were supposed to do our challenge video as if we really were applying for a blog position at this fictitious company Donovan Decker. This means I did this whole video "in character". And according to my research (i.e. 25 minutes spent on YouTube and Twitter), I'm the only idiot who addressed her video to Gray... as if she really wrote me that email and I'm really up for a blog position.

Kicking myself a little. Anyway... we got a $50 gift card with instructions to shop and I immediately considered buying shoes. I have a well documented problem, people. But then I thought that in order to truly, for real, for real showcase my own personal style and to find unique items that I'd have to thrift. So, off to Buffalo Exchange I went:
buffaloexchangefinds
[music credit: Dream City by Free Energy]
And, holy smokes, did I clean up. I did do a return and had a bit of store credit, so in a full disclosure I had a little more than $50 to spend, but nonetheless, be prepared to be impressed with my haul. Folks, this video is for you, not just "Gray":
Can you believe that coat? And that gown? I'm kinda of still on a shopping high from those finds!

Okay, now I say we show Jane By Design that Adored Austin readers and blog friends are thrifty to the max. If you want to shoot and upload a video or photo of your own shopping haul to the Jane By Design Facebook page, please do so. It could be great exposure for your own blog. You can even mention Adored Austin if you want to throw me a bone in this contest (no obligations, though!). I just thought it'd be neat to show that just because we have a budget, we can still find amazing things and fully stretch our dollars by shopping second-hand. Would someone like Gray Chandler Murray ever shop at a place like Buffalo Exchange? I doubt it. But I do think that someone like Jane would.

Stay tuned for the next challenge. I get to test my absurdly terrible drawing skills (Heidi, you're going to love this). It's going to be an unintentional laugh riot, so be sure to check back in with me on Tuesday for part two of the Jane By Design Style Challenge.
