These businesses gave (a darn).

Monday, April 29, 2013

I want to take a quick moment to highlight the generous and awesome people who supported my fundraising efforts for the Austin Children's Shelter during Amplify Austin. Please take a moment and visit and support these kind companies (don't forget that Mother's Day is coming up soon!).

Beauty Queen Blog
beautyqueen
I officially met Cindilu, the make-up and hairstylist behind Beauty Queen Blog during the Texas Style Council March mixers. She was so sweet and funny. She says, "My personal goal [is to] enhance natural beauty and create magic for everyone I come across. My passion is to create looks that you can wear every day to feel your best."

Blank Slate Patterns
blankslate
Melissa, the blogger behind Melly Sews, took the big plunge and quit her day job to start her own small business, Blank Slate Patterns. Featuring modern sewing patterns for kids, these affordble patterns are absolutely adorable. Because she's a mom to two boys, she has great patterns for the little gentlemen in your lives. She says, "I choose sewing over buying because I like unique, well-fitting clothing. And I like that through sewing I can dress myself and my family more responsibly with regards to the environment by utilizing upcycled/recycled materials and support small and local businesses by sourcing fabrics and materials from them."

Dragonflight Dreams
dragonflightdreams
I met Amanda at Texas Style Council last year, and our paths have crossed a few times out since. She's a kind soul, creative and thoughtful. Dragonflight Dreams is her shop of hand printed clothing, tote bags and art prints with designs of a whimsical, fantastical, or elemental nature.

Little Low Studio
littlelow
Caitlin and I met at Le Garage Sale earlier this year, but I was already familiar with her goods shop Feb 10 Designs because I had been stalking a few of her animal alphabet prints via Etsy. When I found out she was launching an Eco Friendly print shop, I was excited to see her new work. Everything in her shop is awesome-- clean and modern with a touch of whimsey, my favorites are her hoop art prints.

Longhorn Fashions
longhornfashions
Way back in 2010, Tessie sponsored Adored Austin when she first opened her online retail shop. We did a great giveaway, and she even sent Jude an adorable Longhorns outfit, which Caroline is about to inherit! Longhorn Fashions is the go-to place to find affordable, adorable burnt orange clothing and accessories. Why relegate yourself to a shapeless mascot t-shirt, when you can find a cute sundress to wear to your campus events, instead? (Psst- there's a few maroon and purple items online, too).

Musana Jewelry
musana
As someone who is striving to highlight more companies that actively partner with global artisans and pay them a fair wage, I was really happy to learn about Musana Jewelry, where 100% of profits return the the artisians in Lugazi, Uganda. Each piece of jewelry sold takes the women artisans one step closer to survival, to providing for their children, and to eventual independence to pursue their dreams. While working for Musana, they practice English, receive literacy training, health training, financial guidance, and help with savings plans. The hope is that Musana will be a springboard for them to eventually stand on their own and pursue their dreams. After paying the women’s salaries and for operational costs, Musana jewelry profits are put back into the community to strengthen families and stability through various international development projects.

Noonday Collection
noonday
I did a big spotlight post on Noonday Collection a few weeks ago, as it's one of my favorite companies. Their jewelry is so lovely! The artisans Noonday purchases their collections from know their craft. For them to be paid a fair and competitive wage for their skilled work is a life-altering opportunity for most of them. Because the artisans are working under Fair Trade guidelines, your purchases enable them to earn more than what they would be earning in another job. This extra income allows them to put their children in school, buy chickens, or even expand their own business so they can employ their local community. Lilly Neubauer is my Noonday Collection Ambassador, and she's a kind hearted, super helpful gal up in Dallas.

Polished
polished
I owe much of the success of the Texas Style Council to Tracy. My very first year throwing it (when it was called the "New Media Fashion Brunch"), she generously hosted. I later learned that her Etsy shop (now with over 13,000 sales and a 100% positive rating) is one of the top Etsy shops, ever! Wrap your head around this: there are over 500,000 active Etsy sellers, and Polished ranks as the #42 jewelry seller. Featuring bright, chunky, eye catching designs, Polished is best known for its Day of the Dead collection and it's one of a kind pottery shard jewelry. Nothing is over $35 and everything is handmade here in Austin!

POM (Patterns of Movement) PR
pompr
Kristen Chin is the public relations maven behind all of Austin Fashion Week. I first met her in 2009, when Adored Austin was a baby and POM PR was about to launch. I am always impressed by her company's work; their communication with me has always been personal, friendly, accommodating, and swift, which is a breath of fresh air! If ever I am in need of public relation services, Kristen is the one in Austin who I'd trust with that task!

Red Chair Market
redchair
I finally got to meet Anita, the genius behind this new company, last March at Langford Market, and I was so impressed with her candor, knowledge, and warmth. Sometimes a company comes along and you ask yourself, "Why didn't I think of that?" That's what I said to myself when I first learned about Red Chair Market, which is a listing service for vintage, antique, and used furniture. As someone who loves vintage furniture but has had two bad Craigslist experiences, a place like Red Chair Market, is a welcome relief.

Team Ensor
teamensor
Shannon and her husband Joe were in my Bradley birthing class, and her daughter Stella was born a couple weeks after Jude (and she's due any day now with her second daughter, too, so Josie and Caroline will be in the same grade, too). After spending ten weeks or so together preparing to become first time parents, we got to know the couple behind Team Ensor Real Estate pretty well! Strange fact about the kind of emails I get via Adored Austin: on average of 10 times per week, I get an email that says, "We're thinking about moving to Austin. Can you recommend places to live?" Strange fact about me: I am always looking at Austin real estate, and dreaming way beyond what my family can comfortably afford! Ha! In fact, at this very moment, I have a tab of Team Ensor opened up, and I'm looking at houses a little closer to my husband's work. I have my eye on a half acre up north. If you're thinking about moving to Austin or relocating within Austin, I really recommend reaching out to my friends Shannon and Joe.

Toni Marie Photography
tonimarie
Embarrassing, but true: I am active on a local mom board. Chris calls me a "forum warrior", but I'll take his teasing any day because truly I feel better connected to the local mom community by being an active participant on the boards. I met Toni through the boards, and I just love her work. The older I get and the faster life seems to be whizzing by, the more photos I wish I had. When people list off prized possessions, family photos are often one of those things we say "if the house were burning down, I'd quickly grab my photos". I really love Toni's attention to light, and I'm a big fan of her "Mommy & Me Sessions".

Tupelo Grease Co.
tupelogrease
Launched in 2006 by Texas graphic designer Dylan Moore, Tupelo Grease Co. is inspired by a throwback lifestyle filled with smokey back-street card rooms, dimly lit lounges, blaring rock joints and honky tonks. Tupelo Grease just feels like Texas to me. The line features ultra-soft graphic tees, thermals and pearl snap shirts, and retro accessories like distressed trucker caps and chunky buckles.

Thank you so much for supporting the businesses who support my fundraising efforts in Austin.

Thank you, Amplified Austin Partners!

My City Life friends and I were able to raise a total of $1375 for the Austin Children's Shelter, which is just phenomenal. I just want to do a quick shout-out to all the kind businesses who donated to the Austin Children's Shelter through my Amplify Austin fundraising page:

Please make sure to visit each of these websites and support small businesses who give a darn. I am grateful for their generosity and floored that Austin was able to raise $2.8 million dollars for charity in just 24 hours. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and I'm starting to believe that includes our hearts.

So many shoes and only two feet

Thursday, December 15, 2011

I have never been a shoe person. Belts? Yes. Jewelry? Yes. And, yes, even a brief time in middle school, Blossom Hats. But shoes? No, not really. But lately, I've felt that changing. I think I'm going a little shoe crazy because I'm perfectly satisfied with my wardrobe at this point (--insert collective gasp--) but my shoe collection is in a sorry state thanks to my feet still being a half size larger than they were pre-Jude.

Since Saturday, I've become the proud owner of three new pairs of shoes:
shoeaddict
Kate Spade wedge ankle booties found at Buffalo Exchange (similar) |The ShoeMint Leopard Jolly wedges (scored at 50% off) | MIA stacked loafers c/o Francesca's Collection

I wore the ShoeMint boots for the third day in a row today because they are that comfortable. I even did an HEB run in leggings and an oversized sweater and threw on those boots.

I'm starting to think shoe shopping is like smoking crack. It's whack! I mean, I pretty much increased my shoe collection by 25% this weekend and I STILL found myself shoe shopping in these wee hours after midnight tonight. I blame Julie. She introduced me to SoleSociety and I keep putting things in my cart there and then shutting my laptop and reminding myself to get a grip on my (barely dormant) online shopping addiction. Oh, *sigh*, but aren't these cute?
solesociety

Whatever you do, do not go to SoleSociety (or ShoeMint or anything like them) prior to Christmas. You're liable to spend all of the money you've allotted for presents for others there. Step away from the computer. Log out of PayPal. Put your debit card down and RUN!

I made it out with some intervention from some friends. Did you?

By the way, I have been getting dressed...

I can see why Tyra is so crazy about Vaseline now...

Wednesday, December 14, 2011

Have you guys seen this video, yet? This really happened!
Obviously, Tyra Banks has long been a fan of Vaseline, but all of her insanity aside, legendary beauties such as Marilyn Monroe and my own mother tout Vaseline as the MVP of their beauty arsenal.

Some back story: my husband Chris is a little chemist. He's always mixing up lotions and making his own toner and face wash (instead of just buying some from the Clinique counter like I do). Me? Not so much. I buy what I need and don't usually get all DIY-y in my make-up or beauty routine, but that all changed last week because 1- I saw the above video, and 2- Vaseline sent me a nifty little package to try some dabbling of my own. While Jude was sleeping, I made a sugar scrub, created smokey eyes, made a travel lipgloss and contouring cream, and found a secret way to use less perfume! Just call me the vanity MacGyver. Wait. Don't. Calling me "Awesome" will do just fine.
vaseline_all
Here's everything you need to get started: contact lens case, pressed eye shadow (dark for contouring cream, light for highlighting cream. I used Radiant's Sand Dollar), dark eyeliner (I used Radiant's Gravity), matte lipstick (I used Radiant's Matte Red), raw sugar, Precision Tip Q-Tips, Crystal Light powder, a toothbrush, Vaseline, Vaseline Lip Therapy (optional), my favorite perfume (Michael Kors Island Hawaii).

1. Lip Sugar Scrub:
vaseline_scrub
Kiss your chapped, winter lips goodbye. Place a half pea sized dollop of Vaseline on an old toothbrush, dust with raw sugar, and move the toothbrush around in a circle motion on your dry lips. Wipe off with a dry washcloth. Apply Vaseline Lip Therapy or your new gloss from trick #3 (see below).

2. Smokey Eyes
:
vaseline_liner
Line your upper lids as close to the lash line as possible with a dark liner (gray is the optimal choice). Put a tiny amount of Vaseline on the end of a Precision Tip Q-Tip. Smudge lightly, moving the Q-Tip from the inside corner of your eye, outward in small dabs.

3. Handy Dandy Travel Lipgloss:

vaseline_lips
Using a Q-Tip, place a generous pat of Vaseline in a (clean) contact case. Using the stick part of the Q-Tip, chisel a bit of your favorite matte lipstick off and add it to the Vaseline with a tiny sprinkle of Crystal Light (for flavoring). Mix well. Do a different shade in the other side or make...

4. Cream Contour
:
vaseline_eyes
Using a Q-Tip, place a generous pat of Vaseline in a (clean) contact case. Using the stick part of the Q-Tip (broken in half), scrape out a bit of tan eyeshadow and add it to the Vaseline. Mix well. Using your ring finger, apply to the crease above your eyes or under your cheek bones. Note: Use a light beige eyeshadow (instead of dark tan) to make a cream highlighter, instead.

5. Perfume Extender
:
vaseline_perfume
I read that perfume doesn't last as long on dry skin. This trick has made my perfume scent last until I shower! Put a pea sized amount of Vaseline in your palm and rub your palms together to emulsify it. Now treat this like lotion apply to your inner wrists, décolleté, and behind your ears. Add a dab of perfume to the same areas.

I love tricks #3 & #4 for traveling. I plan to make a contact case with two DIY lip glosses (red and pink) and one with the contour and the highlighter when Chris and I go to Atlanta next week for the holidays.

I've also been using Vaseline as a nighttime moisturizer (much to Chris' chagrin) and I've been slathering it on my heels and sleeping in socks to keep my feet soft. So far, so good! I have extremely acne prone skin and was more than a little trepidatious to use Vaseline as my nighttime moisturizer, but my mom does it and she looks amazing for her age! So far, no breakouts!

What about you guys? Any other beauty DIY's you want to share with me?
Comment of the Day: I "read in an interview with Evangeline Lily that she travels so much and never gets sick on planes because she rubs Vaseline inside her nose (yes, inside). It prevents her nose from drying out and getting teeny cracks in it where the germs can get in. I've tried this a few times and it works. Though, make sure to apply it when you are alone lest you be mistaken for a nose picker." -Julie

Giveaway [closed]: Purse & Clutch

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

You guys! My new dress and my new lens are here! I am so excited!

I was so excited that I fell into my closet and randomly grabbed whatever to wear...

Either that or I'm trying my hand at pattern mixing. I used to think stripes and florals were a bit of a stretch for me, but whoa! Today I'm sporting two types of chevron, floral, and leopard. You might be a style blogger if...

dress: Edge of Urge (USA made) | jacket: c/o Francesca's Collection (USA made) | vintage belt: Thrift Town | clutch: c/o Purse & Clutch (fair trade, handmade) | shoes: c/o Lulu*s

I love this little clutch so much. It's the perfect size to throw in my diaper bag and pull out to take along when I don't feel like lugging the entire diaper bag inside.

Better than that, it's a bag with a whole lot of heart behind it. Purse and Clutch is owned by my new friend Jen, and I'm so pleased to introduce this little company to you. From their company profile:
"The mission of Purse & Clutch is to partner with local economies to create dignified, living wage jobs for those in need. We place a high value on relationships, generosity, beauty, and intentionality, and use these values as decisions filters.

We purchase our products from JOYN, a fair trade, wholesale company with a vision to connect the poor with Western markets.

They provide the people of Dehradun, India, the opportunity to work in a great environment and provide for their families. The employees of JOYN take the time to know, understand, and love those with whom they work.

They work with the local economy, instead of against it, which discourages dependence on outside aid that can only be a temporary source of help. JOYN chooses to employ many who would otherwise be unable to find work: men and women with severe health issues, women who have been domestically abused, and youth who are breaking family cycles and choosing employment over begging.

JOYN employees card and spin fabric from 100% organic cotton and then weave it together by hand. Designs are then added through the ancient Indian art of hand-carved wooden block printing."
I'm especially pleased to offer one lucky Adored Austin reader her choice of bag from Purse and Clutch.

Outfit overload!

Monday, November 21, 2011

Two necklaces, two watches, three rings, five bracelets, two shirts, tights, a mullet hem skirt, heels, a belt, and a clutch. Question: How many style blogger trends can one blogger possibly wear at once? Answer: all of them.

Tomorrow: Langford Market Craft Fair

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Speaking of feeling crafty, what are you doing tomorrow? My friends at Langford Market are having a craft party and craft pop-up shop from 5-8 tomorrow night. Baby Jude and I will be there. Won't you join us?
As if free drinks and crafty time isn't enough to entice you, I found this in my inbox that would work for tomorrow, too:
Yep! $25 off a $50 purchase. That's pretty much like a Groupon and you know how nuts I am about Groupons! See you there? RSVP at 512.482.8500 or leave a comment here by 5:00 tonight and I'll RSVP for us all.

Of course I own pink leather pants.

Friday, November 11, 2011

Last night, I decided that it was too chilly to wear my DIY scarf dress to meet up with the Urbandig founder, so I changed into these pale pink leather pants that I picked up from Texas Thrift, instead:

date: 10 Nov 2011 | occasion: meeting
leather pants: thrifted (Texas Thrift) | blouse: c/o Zara giftcard (made in Turkey, not Brazil) | heels: thrifted, Seychelles (Savers) | antler necklace: c/o The Jasmine Gallery (2010) | earrings: c/o Merah

I am totally digging leather this year. I wore my leather shorts non-stop this summer, and I have my eyes peeled for a smart leather skirt. Because of this, these pants may find themselves in regular rotation 'round here.

Something else I'd like to wear more often is dangly earrings. I usually only wear some nice studs since my ears are sensitive. I usually eschew costume jewelry earrings. Merah sent me these earrings a while back with the promise that these wouldn't bother my ears. Can you believe it? It's a whole line of affordable, statement making earrings for folks with sensitive ears. And you know what? She was totally right. I haven't had any of the bothersome itching or soreness I usually get from earrings with these. Now, if only she could come up with pretty dangly ones that Jude wouldn't be tempted to tug on...

Blazer tag + gold lamé

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

There's a place in Austin called Blazer Tag. It's laser tag, but they added a "b" to make it seem cooler. For my birthday a couple of years ago, the theme was "Forever Young" and my friends all came over dressed like children, and we ate dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets and pizza and drank Kool-aid. Then we went and tore it up at Blazer Tag.

Joey showed up at my party, not dressed like a little kid. He showed up in a blazer... because we were going to Blazer Tag. So now, whenever I wear a blazer (which is often in the fall) I have this unshakable urge to play laser tag.
newskirt
Am I the only grown woman who enjoys laser tag?

The print is lovely but the skirt is way too short to play laser tag in.

But I feel like I could kick some serious butt in these boots!

date: 9 Nov 2011 | occasion: Joann's run
blazer: United Colors of Benetton via ThriftTown | shirt: Trouvé (Nordstrom) | skirt: vintage via Delightful Dozen | tights: Target | boots: c/o Wanted | clutch: LV | belt: vintage via Buffalo Exchange

Speaking of kicking butt, I kicked butt at Joann's today. Amanda tweeted me to let me know that Simplicity patterns were five for $5.00. I got ten:

I may have went a little overboard because I also got some gold lamé and a sweatpants pattern:
Sometimes I could use some intervention... especially when it comes to fabric. Shiny stuff is my kryptonite! Since I bought it, I'm going to commit, though. I'm scared! These could end up really awesome or really lame (<-- pun intended). Either way, I'm going to be the owner of gold lamé sweatpants that I sewed myself. This both frightens me and excites me.
